By October 22, 2024 Physiotherapy

During the recent European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education (ENPHE) conference, Physiopedia’s Kateryna Tymruk-Skoropad presented on strengthening physical therapy education in wartime, speaking about her experiences improving the quality of education for physical therapists in Ukraine.

The ENPHE  is an organisation that brings together European universities providing physical therapy education. The ENPHE Conference 2024 – Physiotherapy Education: Aiming at Excellence through Collaboration took place on 12–14 September in Warsaw, Poland, and this year’s conference was hosted and organised by The Faculty of Rehabilitation of the Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Poland. This 3-day conference followed the theme “Physiotherapy Education: Aiming at Excellence through Collaboration” and included keynote speakers, activities and workshops.

Physiopedia’s Kateryna Tymruk-Skoropad was invited to speak at ENPHE 2024 on the topic of “Strengthening physical therapy education in wartime – from challenges to national and global cooperation”.

Kateryna works as a translator for Physiopedia Plus (Plus) and also at the Department of Physical Therapy at Lviv State University of Physical Culture, Lviv, Ukraine and as strategic advisor for rehabilitation education development of the War Trauma Rehabilitation initiative.

The profession of physical therapy in Ukraine has had several milestones in its development, including the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014 and its full-scale escalation in 2022. After 2022, the picture of physical therapy needs changed, with a significant increase in the demand for physical therapists in public hospitals. At the same time, gaps in the education system and physical therapists’ education have become apparent.

Kateryna’s presentation highlighted the challenges, barriers and facilitators for physical therapy in Ukraine and the steps taken by the Ukrainian and international community to improve the quality of formal and non-formal education of physical therapists. One such facilitator has been the support from Physiopedia in providing organisations in Ukraine with free access to Plus online rehabilitation education – including online courses developed specifically to address the needs of Ukrainian rehabilitation specialists and translated into Ukrainian.

Physiopedia have also worked closely in support of four universities in strengthening educational programmes to international standards and in facilitating a mentoring programme for physical therapists to support with progressively implementing international experience in student education. Many academic institutions in Ukraine are integrating Plus online courses into their curricula to complement existing teaching strategies, fill gaps in teaching capacity, supplement educational activities and for self-study by bachelor and masters level higher education students.
